Reno Car Intersection Accident Proves Fatal for Pedestrian
A 55-year-old man was fatally injured in an intersection accident after a vehicle hit him while he was walking in a marked crosswalk. According to a Fox Reno news report, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred at the intersection of Kietzke Lane and Gentry Way. Police say the pedestrian was walking in a marked crosswalk, but are still looking into who had the right-of-way. The driver apparently told officials that he had a green light at the time. Police are still investigating that claim.
Under Nevada law, motorists are required to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians walking in crosswalks. NRS 484.325 states: “When official traffic-control devices are not in place or not in operation the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be so to yield, to a pedestrian crossing the highway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the highway upon which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the highway as to be in danger.”
In cases where a pedestrian in a crosswalk is hit, there are a number of questions that must be asked. Was the driver at fault? Was the driver under the influence, distracted, speeding, inattentive, or otherwise negligent? Was the intersection a dangerous one? Did the governmental agency in charge of maintaining that intersection fail to make it safe for pedestrians? Was the accident a direct result of a dangerous condition on the roadway? If a negligent driver was involved, the at-fault motorist can be held liable for the victim’s wrongful death. However, if a dangerous roadway condition caused the accident, the public agency responsible for maintaining the roadway can also be held liable.
Crosswalks are designed to provide a safe and convenient way for pedestrians to cross busy streets and intersections. However, it’s important to use them properly in order to ensure your safety and the safety of others. Here are some tips on how to safely use crosswalks:
Use marked crosswalks
Marked crosswalks are painted white lines on the pavement that indicate where pedestrians should cross. Always use marked crosswalks when they are available, as they are specifically designed for pedestrian safety.
Follow traffic signals and signs
When using a crosswalk, always obey traffic signals and signs. If there is a signal at the crosswalk, wait for the signal to indicate that it’s safe to cross. If there is a stop sign or yield sign at the crosswalk, make sure to stop and check for any approaching vehicles before crossing.
Look both ways before crossing
Before stepping into a crosswalk, always look both ways to ensure that it is safe to cross. Even if you have a walk signal or a green light, make sure to check for any turning vehicles or bicycles that may not be following the traffic signals.
Avoid distractions
Avoid using your phone or other distractions while crossing the street. Pay attention to your surroundings and stay alert to any potential hazards. Keep your headphones off so you can hear any approaching vehicles.
Walk, don’t run
Always walk when crossing a crosswalk. Running can make it more difficult for drivers to see you and can increase the risk of accidents. If you are in a hurry, wait for the next signal or find another marked crosswalk.
Stay visible
Make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright or reflective clothing, especially at night or in low-light conditions. If you are crossing a poorly lit area, use a flashlight or your phone’s flashlight to increase your visibility.
Watch for turning vehicles
One of the most common causes of pedestrian accidents is drivers making a turn without seeing a pedestrian in the crosswalk. When crossing, make sure to watch for any turning vehicles and make eye contact with the driver to ensure that they see you.
Keep children close
Children can be unpredictable and may not understand the dangers of crossing a busy street. Always keep young children close to you and hold their hand when crossing the street.
Stay on the sidewalk
Whenever possible, stay on the sidewalk or designated pedestrian path. If there is no sidewalk, walk as far away from traffic as possible, facing oncoming traffic.
Avoid crossing between parked cars
It can be tempting to cross between parked cars, but this can be dangerous as drivers may not see you until it’s too late. Always use marked crosswalks to cross the street.
