Barbequing this Labor Day? Remember These 9 Safety Tips

Grilling

With Labor Day weekend coming up, many people will be firing up the grill to celebrate the end of summer with their family and friends. Before you get started, make sure that you are exercising caution when using your grill. Fires from grills can quickly get out of control without the proper safety procedures, and can cause serious property damage, injuries, and possibly fatalities.

Did you know? …

  • Each year, almost 9,000 home fires result from barbeque grills
  • Almost half of all barbeque accident injuries are caused by thermal burns
  • In 2012, emergency rooms treated nearly 17,000 people for a barbeque-related accident
  • Gas grills are responsible for more fires than charcoal grills
  • Leaks or breaks result in nearly 20% of all barbeque fires

To ensure your safety and the safety of your loved ones, keep the following tips in mind for successful Labor Day grilling:

  1. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using your grill. Never attempt to use your grill for anything other than its intended purpose.
  2. Always supervise your grill while lit, and make sure to keep small children and pets a safe distance away.
  3. Never use your grill indoors or in any other enclosed area. Only use it in an open area a safe distance away from your home, trees, or anything else that could potentially catch fire.
  4. Never add lighter fluid or any other kind of fuel to coals or kindling that have already been lit. This could cause a dangerous flare up that could easily get out of control.
  5. Place a fireproof pan below your grill to catch any falling grease or ash.
  6. Use long-handled grilling tools to keep your hands and arms as far from the flames as possible.
  7. Make sure to place your grill on a steady surface. Many injuries occur when grills tip over or collapse.
  8. Ensure that you are wearing proper protective clothing when grilling. Hot coals or grease may burn exposed skin, especially bare torsos or feet.
  9. If using a gas or propane grill, inspect all hoses and/or tanks before lighting the grill.

By following these simple tips, you can greatly reduce your chances of an accident and enjoy a safe and delicious Labor Day weekend!
