It is important for all drivers to be aware of these dangers and take precautions while behind the wheel so that they can stay safe on the roads.
Definition of Distracted Driving
Distracted driving is a dangerous behavior that occurs when drivers are not paying attention to the road.
It can include activities such as texting, talking on the phone, eating, drinking, putting on makeup, or adjusting the radio while behind the wheel.
Distracted driving can have serious consequences and can lead to motor vehicle accidents resulting in damage to personal property, personal injury claims, medical expenses, and even death. With this in mind, it is important for all drivers to be aware of their surroundings and focus on the task of driving when behind the wheel.
By understanding how distractions can impact our ability to drive safely and following traffic laws accordingly, we can help prevent distracted driving accidents from occurring and save lives in the process.
Nevada statute 484B.165 bans handheld wireless communications devices, including cell phones, to text, send, read messages, or communicate while driving. It is illegal to surf the web, send or receive texts, or use any handheld electronic device when behind the wheel. Hands-free devices are encouraged now for safer driving.
Overview of the Accident at Las Vegas Intersection
A two-vehicle accident claimed the life of a 75-year-old man on Tuesday at the intersection of Alta Drive and Hualapai Way, according to an ABC 13 Action News report.
Las Vegas police were called to the scene of the collision, which occurred at about 4:30pm.
Based on initial witness reports and evidence, it appears that a 1998 Dodge Durango struck a 2003 Hyundai Elantra as it was travelling southbound on Hualapai across the intersection at Alta. The Elantra was turning left and was struck in the right side by the Durango.
The driver of the Durango suffered minor injuries and the driver of the Elantra suffered moderate injuries, but the collision proved fatal for the front-seat passenger of the Elantra. The 75-year-old was transported to UMC Trauma, where he was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Police believe the driver of the Durango ran a red light and are considering distraction as a possible reason behind this act. Only a thorough investigation into the accident, however, will reveal exactly what led to the fatal collision.
This tragedy marks the ninth traffic fatality in Las Vegas in 2014. Car accidents, particularly side-impact collisions such as the one that claimed this victim’s life, have the potential to cause catastrophic injuries.
When the side of a vehicle is struck with force, the victim on that side will typically be at the greatest risk of injury, even in newer vehicles with front and side airbags. It is important for victims and families of victims to take action when distracted driving or other types of driver negligence or wrongdoing cause serious car accidents.

Certain traffic laws may apply depending on the circumstances of the crash.
Distracted driving played a role in at least 580 Henderson-area traffic accidents over a recent five-year period, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT). Distraction behind the wheel also takes the lives of around a dozen victims in Nevada annually.
Laws to Combat Distracted Driving in Clark County
In order to combat the growing problem of distracted driving in Clark County, local law enforcement agencies have enacted new laws to deter drivers from engaging in this dangerous behavior.
These laws aim to reduce the number of distracted drivers on the road and make roads safer for everyone.
The new regulations include increased penalties for those found guilty of violating local distracted driving laws, such as fines, license suspension, or even jail time depending on the severity of the violation.
Many cities in Clark County have implemented campaigns that educate drivers about the dangers of distracted driving.
These campaigns include posters, television ads, and other public service announcements that remind drivers to stay focused while behind the wheel.
Law enforcement officers are also conducting more frequent traffic stops in areas known for high rates of distraction-related accidents in order to identify and take action against those who choose to ignore these safety rules.
These steps are necessary if we are going to reduce the number of accidents caused by distracted driving in Clark County. By implementing stricter laws and improving public awareness about distracted driving risks, we can all do our part to make our roads a safer place for everyone.
