According to an article published by Business Finance News, 20 vehicle manufacturers have agreed to make automatic braking systems a new standard for their vehicles by September 2022. The United States Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the 20 automakers that agreed, which also make up 99% of auto sales in the US, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety confirmed this statement on Thursday, March 17.
How Will These Automatic Braking Systems Keep Drivers Safe?
The automatic braking system is designed to stop a vehicle if a driver does not apply the brakes or does not apply enough pressure to the brakes to prevent an accident. According to statistics, these auto-emergency braking systems will help reduce the number of injuries and fatalities that occur as a result of vehicle collisions. Sources state that the number of crashes which occur every year will drop as much as 20%, which means more than one million car accidents can be prevented annually.

NHTSA Announces Update to Historic AEB Commitment by 20 Automakers | NHTSA
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced an update to the historic commitment by 20 automakers to make Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) a standard in new vehicles by 2022. The NHTSA is expanding their commitment to include all vehicles under 10,000lb as well as light trucks and SUVs. This will provide additional safety benefits to drivers of these larger vehicles that are more prone to rollover accidents.
This update is expected to help reduce the amount of traffic fatalities and injuries by half in the next five years.
