Common Causes of Bicycle Accidents in Las Vegas
Several recurring factors contribute to bicycle accidents throughout the Las Vegas Valley:
- Dooring happens when a car occupant opens a door into the path of an approaching cyclist without checking for oncoming bicycle traffic.
- Failure to yield occurs when drivers do not give cyclists the right of way at intersections, driveways, crosswalks, or when making turns across a cyclist’s path.
- Distracted driving, including texting, using GPS, or otherwise dividing attention while driving, can cause motorists to overlook cyclists traveling in bike lanes, shoulders, or roadways.
- Unsafe passing occurs when drivers pass cyclists too closely or without providing adequate clearance, particularly on narrow roads without dedicated bicycle lanes.
- Poor road conditions, including potholes, debris, cracked pavement, and other roadway defects, can create serious hazards for cyclists.
Identifying which of these factors caused your accident is critical to establishing liability and pursuing fair compensation. If you have been injured in a bike crash, our Las Vegas bicycle accident attorneys can take the necessary steps to protect your rights.
Common Types of Bike Accident Injuries
After being struck by an automobile, bicycle riders can experience a variety of injuries. Our bicycle accident lawyers in Las Vegas see many common injuries, such as:
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Bicyclists can suffer from a traumatic brain injury when they are hit by a car. The force of the impact can cause the brain to bounce around inside the skull, causing bruising, bleeding, or other damage. This type of injury may result in permanent impairments. Contact our Las Vegas brain injury lawyers if you or a loved one suffered brain damage in a crash.
Broken Bones
The force of an impact can cause a cyclist to be thrown from their bike. This can result in broken bones such as arms, legs, and ribs.
Damage to Internal Organs
This can happen when the force of an accident causes internal organs to rupture or sustain damage, which can be life-threatening and may require emergency surgery.
Damage to Ligaments in the Knees, Elbows, and Ankles
When a person is involved in a bicycle accident, the ligaments in the knees, elbows, and ankles can be damaged due to the sudden and forceful impact.
Facial Injuries
Broken noses, knocked-out teeth, and permanent facial scarring are all serious side effects of being hit by a car while riding your bike.
Neck and Spine Injuries
The head can be thrown back during an accident, causing the neck to be strained or broken. Some bike accident victims have a permanent disability from a neck injury, such as a result of spinal cord injuries, including paralysis, numbness, or loss of sensation.
Wrongful Death
Sadly, some bike accidents can also result in death. If you have lost a loved one in a bicycle crash, reach out to our Las Vegas wrongful death lawyers.
Las Vegas Bicycle Accident Statistics
Bicycle accidents are a serious safety concern on Las Vegas roads. Nationally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported 1,103 deaths among bicyclists and other cyclists in 2024, with nearly three-quarters occurring in urban areas like the Las Vegas Valley.
Bicyclist deaths spike between July and October, coinciding with peak tourism season and higher temperatures for cycling. NHTSA data also show that failure to yield the right of way is the leading factor in fatal bicycle crashes, followed by low-light or visibility conditions at the time of the crash.
Locally, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) track cyclist crash data across Clark County annually.

Most Dangerous Roads for Cyclists in Las Vegas
Certain Las Vegas corridors see disproportionately high numbers of cyclist-involved crashes due to heavy traffic volume, high speeds, and inconsistent bike infrastructure:
- Las Vegas Boulevard (the Strip) experiences constant congestion and dense pedestrian and cyclist crossings, all of which can increase the risk of collisions.
- Flamingo Road has multiple travel lanes and frequent lane changes near hotel and casino entrances, which can leave cyclists particularly vulnerable at intersections.
- Maryland Parkway is a major north-south artery with heavy commuter traffic and limited protected bike lanes along several stretches, creating additional challenges for cyclists.
- Charleston Boulevard features wide, high-speed lanes and frequent turning movements, which can increase the risk of both right-hook and left-turn collisions involving cyclists.
These roads are frequently cited in Clark County’s high-injury network data as priority corridors for cyclist safety improvements.
Pedestrian accidents are also common in these areas. If you’ve been hurt while walking, our Las Vegas pedestrian accident lawyers can help.
Nevada Bicycle Laws
Under NRS 484B, cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicle drivers on Nevada roads. Nevada has no statewide helmet law for adult cyclists, though local ordinances may impose requirements for minors.
Cyclists must operate on the roadway and must ride as near to the right-hand curb as practicable, except when passing, turning, or avoiding hazards. Drivers, in turn, owe cyclists a duty of due care to give them space and avoid causing them harm whenever possible.
Nevada’s dooring law makes it illegal to open a vehicle door into traffic without first checking that it’s safe, a common cause of serious cyclist injuries. If you have been injured, talk to our Las Vegas car accident lawyers.
Tourist Cyclist Accidents in Las Vegas
Cycling in Las Vegas can be risky for tourists. Many people rent bikes or e-scooters without knowing the local traffic patterns, one-way streets, or busy areas like the Strip.
Tourist cyclists often ride at night when it’s harder to see, and there are more impaired drivers near entertainment districts. If you get injured while cycling as a visitor to Las Vegas, you can still file a claim under Nevada law.
An attorney can help you navigate Nevada’s legal process remotely, gather evidence before you leave town, and protect your right to compensation.
Nevada’s Statute of Limitations on Bicycle Accident Injuries
In Nevada, the statute of limitations for most personal injury claims is two years from the date the injury occurred. This means you typically have two years to file a lawsuit seeking compensation for damages related to your injury.
If you fail to file within the applicable deadline, you may lose your right to pursue compensation through the court. Circumstances, such as accidents involving minors, can affect how long you have to file a claim.
Because deadlines can vary depending on the circumstances, it is important to understand the rules that apply to your case.

- You may recover financial compensation for lost income due to time off from work or a reduction in hours.
- Victims are often entitled to receive compensation for medical bills incurred due to the injury.
- The court may award damages for emotional pain and suffering that a victim endured as a result of their devastating injuries.
Our bicycle accident lawyers in Las Vegas will negotiate with the liable party’s insurance company and pursue a fair settlement for your damages. We will file a lawsuit if necessary to get the compensation that you deserve.
Who Is Liable When a Cyclist Is Hit by a Car in Nevada?
Liability depends on who caused the accident. Drivers have a legal duty to avoid hitting cyclists whenever possible and must follow traffic laws. If a driver hits a cyclist, the driver is often liable, especially if they were speeding or distracted.
A driver can be held responsible for a cyclist hit by a car in Las Vegas if they change lanes without checking their blind spots, fail to yield, or drive recklessly. According to Nevada law, injured cyclists can seek compensation from the at-fault driver’s insurance.
Determining exact liability requires examining evidence like traffic camera footage, witness statements, and police reports to establish who violated traffic laws or acted negligently.
Can a Cyclist Be at Fault for an Accident with a Car?
Yes, cyclists in Nevada can be responsible for accidents with cars. A cyclist may be at fault if they break traffic laws, such as running red lights, riding against traffic, or not yielding the right of way.
Cyclists may also be responsible if they ride at night without lights, swerve into traffic, or ride on sidewalks where it’s not allowed. In Nevada, cyclists must follow the same traffic rules as drivers.
To figure out who is at fault, our bicycle accident lawyers in Las Vegas need to look at what both the driver and cyclist did before the collision.
