North Las Vegas Police Conduct Pedestrian Safety Event

In an effort to increase driver and pedestrian awareness alike, the North Las Vegas police conducted a pedestrian safety event today. The event took place between 7am and 3:30pm at different crosswalks throughout the area.

Specifically, police officers focused their efforts on informing drivers about failure to yield the right of way to pedestrians and pedestrians who cross the street in undesignated areas, as these are some of the most common causes of pedestrian injuries and fatalities.do pedestrians have the right of way picture of pedestrians in las vegas nevada

Pedestrian Accidents in Clark County: The Statistics

The Las Vegas Sun recently reported on pedestrian crashes throughout Clark County. They used data compiled from the Nevada Department of Transportation from August 2008 to July 2011. During this time frame, there were more than 2,000 pedestrian accidents.

While some of these accidents caused property damage only, a majority of these accidents resulted in the deaths of one or more pedestrians. To view the map of pedestrian accidents in Clark County, click here.

According to CBS Las Vegas, there were 35 pedestrian fatalities in Clark County as of August 29, 2013. This is an incredibly high number when you think about the fact that, in all of 2012, Clark County saw a total of 42 pedestrian deaths.

Jaywalking is illegal just as failing to yield to a pedestrian is. Regardless of which party causes the accident, the results are often devastating. In most cases, pedestrians are permanently injured, disfigured or killed in collisions with motor vehicles.

Another sad statistic is that nearly a quarter of all pedestrian accidents involve a child under the age of 18. This could be due in large part to the fact that many school children walk to and from school instead of using the school bus. This is not the first time that local law enforcement has petitioned for drivers and pedestrians alike to be aware of their surroundings.
