# What is Social Security Disability Insurance? | Open 24/7 Social Security Disability Insurance is disability insurance provided by the federal government. You are paying for it even though you don’t know you are paying for it. We all see the withholdings coming out of our checks. We all see those numbers coming out and, frankly, most of us don’t even know what those withholdings are even for. Some of that money is premiums for disability insurance coverage. In other words, if you can’t work and become disabled, you have coverage and you can apply for monthly benefits. Because the truth is, you have paid for it. You’ve paid those premiums. That money came out of your paycheck on a regular basis – those benefits are yours.
