Injuries in Truck Accidents

Truck Accident Lawyer Serving Las Vegas

Tens of thousands of people are injured in truck accidents each year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), accidents involving large trucks (weighing at least 10,000 pounds) left 88,000 people injured in 2011. Another 3,757 people were killed in truck accidents that same year.

These collisions have the potential to cause catastrophic injuries and fatalities because of the size disparity between a large truck and a typical passenger car, light truck or SUV. The odds are even worse for a pedestrian, bicyclist or motorcyclist who is struck by a large truck.

Types of Truck Accident Injuries

Truck Accident Injuries

A person who is involved in an accident with a semi-truck, tractor-trailer, tanker truck or other large commercial vehicle may experience a wide range of injuries. The force of impact, size and weight of each vehicle, crashworthiness of the victim’s vehicle and even the cargo that the truck was carrying at the time of the accident may influence the type and severity of a victim’s injuries. Whether the victim was wearing a seatbelt and if the airbags deployed properly may also influence what injuries occur. That said; the following are injuries that may be sustained in a truck accident:

  • Whiplash and other neck injuries
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Internal organ damage
  • Facial and dental trauma
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries (including paralysis, paraplegia or quadriplegia)
  • Broken bones
  • Burn injuries
  • “Crush” injuries from the force of impact

The person most likely to be injured in a multi-vehicle truck accident is not the occupant of the truck but the occupant of another vehicle or a non-occupant, if the accident involves a pedestrian or bicyclist. Statistics prove this. According to NHTSA statistics from 2011, the following percentages applied to victims of fatal multi-vehicle truck accidents:

  • Truck occupants accounted for about 7% of fatalities and 18.5% of injuries.
  • Occupants of other vehicles accounted for about 80% of fatalities and 80% of injuries.
  • Non-occupants (pedestrians and bicyclists) accounted for about 13% of fatalities and 2.5% of injuries.

The reasoning behind the increased risk of injury and death for occupants of other vehicles and non-occupants can likely be attributed to the larger size and weight of a large truck. Fully loaded, a tractor-trailer may weigh up to 80,000 pounds or even more with a special permit. A passenger car may weigh about 3,000 to 5,000 pounds. When pitted against a sedan or other smaller vehicle, a large truck has the potential to cause catastrophic damage while sustaining very little damage itself. The occupants of the smaller vehicle will therefore be more likely to sustain injuries while the truck driver may escape relatively unharmed.

The larger size of a tractor-trailer or semi-truck also places occupants of other vehicles at a disadvantage. An example is an underride accident, where the smaller vehicle collides with the rear of the large truck and literally drives underneath the larger vehicle. This can result in the complete crushing or even severance of the upper part of the smaller vehicle.
